The Importance of Spiritual Connection- What is Your Source?

A Walk With Christ

One morning before I began to pull out of my driveway, as always, I decided to turn on some music. Usually, my phone automatically connects to the Bluetooth in my car, and all I have to do his select a song, and it will play. But this time, for some reason, my phone was not connected to my car's Bluetooth. So when I hit play, I wasn't able to hear anything coming through the speakers. It took me all of five seconds to realize that my phone was not connected, therefore, no sound was being produced. But no worries, easy fix, right? Anyone who is familiar with the basic use of technology understands that in order to play a video game, or watch TV, you have to select the proper input or source. Otherwise, you will most likely get a blank screen, or static.

Have you ever wondered why you were not able to hear God speaking to you? Or you felt as if you were no longer able to feel His presence? I would encourage you to check your connection... Are you still connected to the right source?

Adopting healthy habits

There are many habits that we can adopt to strengthen our connection with God and stay connected. A few of them include:

  • Constant prayer

  • Staying in The Word

  • Being still

  • Getting rid of the outside noise.

I can remember the first time that I heard God speak to me very clearly. Although I am sure He has always been speaking to me, I just couldn't recognize His voice. This happened during a time I had an acquaintance ask me to join them in intentionally spending time with God. For 7 days straight, we prayed 3 times a day. My schedule looked something like me praying at 6am, 4pm and 8pm, or right before bed. I am a witness that being intentional about spending time with God makes a substantial difference. If you struggle with prayer, I encourage you to make a schedule and stick to it. Your prayers don't have to be fancy or eloquent. Just talk to Him. He will be glad to hear from you.

We also have to remember that God is always speaking through His Word. Sometimes all you need, is to pick up your bible.

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8 NIV)

More often than not, anytime we are met with obstacles or face tough decisions, we run from this person, to the next, seeking advice. While it certainly can be beneficial to have wise counsel from our brothers and sisters in Christ, sometimes the best thing to do is just be still. We won't always get the answers to our problems immediately. Being still allows you to rest in God's promise that His will, will be done.

With the growing use of technology and social media, we have many ways to become distracted. We may not even realize how much time we spend aimlessly scrolling on our phones, watching TV, and peering into the lives of others through social media. These things are all distractions when we lack time management. Trust me, I am also guilty of spending too much time scrolling or investing into my pastimes. When the Holy Spirit makes me aware of it, I log off of everything for a period of time to quiet all of the outside noise. Getting rid of the outside noise is very necessary when it comes to ensuring a stable connection with God.

Just to reiterate, be intentional about the time you spend with God. Be mindful of the things you are constantly exposing yourself to. It is difficult to hear God's whisper when your mind is cluttered. As we enter into a new week, let's find ways to get connected and stay connected.

As always, stay encouraged on your journey.
