A Walk With Christ

The other day, I came across this video of a young lady worshipping during a mic toss, at a venue where they held open mic nights. I thought the video was amazing for a few reasons. One, the music was on point. If you know me, you know I love music. Two, I thought it was amazing that the name of Jesus was being called upon in a secular environment. Lastly, there was one particular line that this young lady said that really stood out to me. It wasn't the most fancy or eloquently spoken line, nor was it sung in a flashy style. She simply said: "Then you get way down...Did you know your posture is a part of it?" (For context, she is singing about calling on the name of Jesus). For days, I kept repeating those exact words. Initially, you could assume she is only referring to how we physically get down on our knees, because that is certainly important when it comes to praying. But, a few days later, The Holy Spirit revealed to me something much deeper.

As I am sitting in my car, thinking of the words "Did you know your posture is a part of it?" I began to think about how we come to God, praying for certain things, in the wrong posture. For example, have you ever asked God for something, as if you somehow earned it? It may not always be intentional, but sometimes, we think we deserve for God to bless us with certain things because of who we are, or the good things we've done. And when we don't receive whatever it is that we have been praying for at the exact time that we think we should receive it, we are disappointed. I'm sure at some point in our lives, we have all thought "I'm living right and following Christ, why hasn't He blessed me yet, like He has blessed those who aren't living right?" When we come before God with this mindset, it means that we have not fully humbled ourselves. So as the young lady in the video says "Then you get way down..", it is more than just the physical gesture of getting down on your knees to pray to God. We have to make space for God to work in our lives by putting ourselves lower. You have to humble yourself and acknowledge that you depend completely and solely on Him. Depending on Him also means to fully trust His timing. The person that you are today is only because of Him. So when you begin to think that you deserve a particular blessing because of the type of person that you are, remember that you are that person because of Him. You were saved by Grace. God's favor is given freely and is not earned. Once you shift your mindset and aim to view from this perspective, it makes the waiting and the no's a lot more bearable. Instead of thinking "God, what have I done wrong? " Or, "Why haven't you blessed me with this yet?", you will instead recognize that God doesn't withhold anything from you as punishment. His timing is perfect, and He has better plans for you. I encourage you to take a step back and examine your posture when coming before God. The proper posture will reflect an alignment with God's will for you.
Remember, God doesn't owe us anything... He has already given us everything.
